PERFORMANCE WITH CREATIVE
PARTICIPATION OF THE AUDIENCE

COMISSIONED AND ORGANIZED BY GALLERIA CIVICA DI ARTE CONTEMPORANEA TRENTO

The performance Nightmare which took place on 28 th May 2004 in the Teatro Sociale is part of the project In Art Dreams Come True . It presents the artist, Katarzyna Kozyra, as an opera singer on the night prior to her performance. At the beginning everything seems to be taking place as it would during a normal opera performance, however the accumulation of strange events increasingly creates the impression of participating in someone's tortured nightmare. The performance in the theatre is complimented by images appearing on two big screens, one above the auditorium and one above the stage. In three acts the singer embodies three different figures from Mozart's opera. Each act adds to the intensity of the drama undergone by the singer, who cannot sing and who does not know the texts, and who is not paid any attention by the excessively elegant audience. Spurned by her Maestro (Grzegorz PituĊ‚ej) and in the end replaced by a better singer, she falls on the stage in a dead swoon. At the same time, on the big screen, she can be seen stepping atop a bonfire kindled by the Maestro and then burning. Brought back to life, she is no more than a puppet in the maestro's arms. The audience comes onto the stage and the performers disappear in the midst of the crowd.
